Whose side is the recruiter on?

It’s a question I was asked very recently.

When we speak to a client about their role, we are 100% on their side.

Our job is to source, speak to potential candidates and shortlist those that match the client’s requirements as best we can. We don’t want to get the process wrong, and knowing so many of our clients really well, we want them to be 100% happy.

Once we have shortlisted candidates / sent candidates that fit the skills and person fit, and have interviews to book, we are 100% on the candidates’ side.

We won’t coach you to answer our clients’ precise questions successfully, but we want to give you the tools to research yourself to ensure you give the best impression of yourself, AND most importantly, do well so that you can make a decision if the role/company is right for you.

After interviews, where do we sit?

Right on the fence. We are 50/50 then. Clearly, we want candidates to take a job (it’s how we get paid, for success only), but we will only provide honest information to both parties.

Honesty is always the best policy for the best outcomes in recruitment…and longevity as a business in the sector.
