When I started my first recruitment business – TDR – I was young, naïve and had no idea what I was really doing. I had left my previous job of 9 years through my own choice, and enjoyed recruitment (despite suffering from severe stress from the pressure I was put under to make others’ money). I just didn’t fancy commuting to London on top of the long hours of work (and in those days, it was long hours).

I had no overall purpose, no business plan, no mentor, no goal, no business advice, and no business support. Basically, I had no idea.

I had nothing, other than some savings towards a newer car (I think I had a VW Polo/ Ford Escort at the time) and wanting to show my previous employer I was better at recruitment than they told me I was!

5 years of TDR with an ex-colleague, some moderate success and the time was right to end that business and start a new one on my own.

Again, I had no purpose other than wanting to be happier, no real plan or goal..just a little bit more experience of what I needed to do to set up a business and bank account.

Fortunately, at the time, there weren’t the hurdles of social media, CRMs and tech to master. You just needed some sort of PC, a phone line (mobiles weren’t widely used), a printer, pens, paper and of course a fax line!

Did I make many right decisions? NO!

Would I have done certain things differently? YES, without question.

Do I regret things I’ve done? Absolutely!

Could having a purpose and goal have made me more successful? Definitely. Especially if the measure of success was financial alone.

But as I’ve gotten older, I have come to realise that my purpose, and that of Jump IT Recruitment Solutions Limited, has been to help people honestly and ethically.

It’s not about having a bigger house, a fancy car or more material things (we all have too many), doing X or Y, or having an award to say look, we are successful.

My biggest enjoyment by far is an email or call to tell you how great that placement is doing. It’s what still makes me excited and happy even after 3 decades of recruitment.
