If it is too good to be true

Over the years in recruitment, I have been the attempted victim of at least 2 well-known recruitment scams.

Years ago, it was a company from Europe approaching you for help with numerous contract staff requirements.

The idea was that fake candidates who were a perfect fit would contact you for work / apply for the roles and  have the perfect skills. You would speak to them, submit them, and the fake employer would then want to ‘interview’ and offer the fake candidates the role.

They would ‘start’ the job, submit weekly timesheets, which you would pay, then lo and behold invoices never got paid.

More recently, it was a much slicker scam, featuring Teams meetings, supposedly offices in Mayfair, a better website and no trace of the actual employees anywhere.

Luckily, I have never been driven by greed (which I think these scams prey on), and I am also risk-averse.

I have always believed in the adage If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Even when business is quiet, I will still walk away from anything that doesn’t feel right. I’ve done this in the last week, and will likely do it again without hesitation.

Personally, like many reading this (thank you if you are), I also receive scam emails weekly.

It’s the problem with having your contact details available for all to see.

At this time of year, scammers are at their most active.

Be wary of unexpected contact. Do not share sensitive information, and do not be pressured to act quickly. Trust your instincts.

For individuals, there are Government sites that may help.
