You never know who might see your post!!

I often tell job seekers to utilise the power of social media and LinkedIn to maximise their visibility when looking to find work.

Don’t just stick to the same routine of putting a CV on a job board, sitting back, waiting for calls and expecting results. The job market has evolved. You need to be proactive and utilise all possible outlets. Make yourself visible.

Well, a little over a week ago, I was at Gatwick pre-holiday flight (it was a fantastic holiday BTW).

There was no water at Gatwick – no bottle refills were open; no restaurants were able to open, and horror of horrors, Wetherspoons was closed.

I took a picture of an empty Wetherspoons as we walked past, and posted it on my X/Twitter account and said at Gatwick and Wetherspoons is closed!! First world problems, etc.

As we sat on the plane, I noticed I had over 15 direct messages.

Just about every major UK news outlet/news paper had messaged me asking for either permission to use my photos, OR wanting a quick interview.

The flight attendant was 2 minutes away from telling passengers to switch to flight mode, so I called one person back – The BBC – to give an overview of what we experienced. I also said permission granted to all outlets that asked to use my dodgy pictures.

7 hours later, on arrival, Radio 5 Live messaged asking to interview me. My so-so, average pictures I had taken for a joke had been in various newspapers and online news sites too; I was also quoted in several.

I suppose the point of this post is to say.

Being proactive and being visible in your job search can result in you just being in the right place at the right time for the right job.

It is tough out there, and August makes things tougher still, but do keep to your daily job search routines! Keep posting too.

PS. On arrival back at Gatwick. Our car wouldn’t start. I took a call from a number expecting it to be about our flat car battery at Gatwick parking. It was Radio Kent wanting to speak to me about AI and recruitment, and could I make a live call in an hour.
I wouldn’t have taken the call if the car had started.
