Today’s CV tip may seem innocuous enough, but please read on. It could make a difference.
Your email address can be quite revealing.
A good 90% of candidates we speak to will have a simple email address they use for personal and job-hunting purposes.
Usual format of name, year of birth, or something familiar @gmail, @outlook, etc.
That’s all innocuous enough.
However, a good 10% of candidates we interact with have an unusual/revealing email address on their CV that gives insight into personal info, unusual hobbies, preferences or pursuits that may put off an employer, particularly when it comes to allegiances or politics.
For example, if you are a contractor seeking a permanent role, it is pertinent to change your email address if it has the word ‘contract’ or ‘contractor’ or your own limited company in the title.
I am not saying your email will 100% affect your application (as we have seen some with sports allegiances actually be a talking point), but if a recruiting company is considering candidates and arranges a direct Teams call for their permanent, short listing of potential hires and sees the address saying contract/contractor, could that put them off you if they have a permanent job on offer?
The simple and easy solution for anyone job hunting is to set up a simple email purely to use for your job-hunting purposes only.
By doing this, you can then ignore the endless spam that will continue when you find a new job, and all your recruitment is in one place.
Please do avoid words or phrases in email addresses that could cause friction, offence, or affect your job hunt.
It really could be the difference.
