As a business owner, I accept that I will sometimes have to reply to emails, messages out of hours. It’s not what I originally signed up for (rather naively, perhaps), but it’s become normal.

I receive emails/texts/WhatsApps and calls on weekends, bank holidays, and even had calls on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, expecting me to answer.

Recently out with friends who had days off. I noticed everyone checks their work emails multiple times a day. 1 told of earlier calls with their boss. 1 was pulled into an unexpected hour-long meeting on their day off.

I used to have an employer who would call on your day off, or even pop around to my flat to check what I was up to.

Is this an acceptable working practice these days?

Should boundaries and days off be respected?

Does it depend on how senior your role is?
