It’s a really important question to consider.
Job benefits can be key to staff retention and staff attraction.
So, when was the last time you looked at your benefits package?
Talking to my colleague, we noticed that certain companies we work with have far greater success at hiring staff than others.
Now, salary budget, flexibility and speed of interviewing are critical, but an attractive and relevant benefits package is equally important to attract the best talent.
Every person is different, but holiday entitlement, training/certification, and pension contribution always rank highly (IMHO)
Candidates, when offered a job, will often ask specific questions about benefits on offer be that about the employee / employer pension contribution, sick pay, when health care kicks in, is my family included etc. The right benefits package is critical to hiring the person your business or team needs.
Over my career, I have had conversations about benefits that include:
‘Well, we bought a high-spec coffee machine, but no one uses it!’
“We offered a daily fruit bowl, but no one ate the fruit”.
“We have a gym/table tennis table/pool table/golf driving range/dartboard onsite, but it’s rarely used outside of lunchtime”
“People should be happy to have a job first and foremost”
Every person is different in what may be important to them.
If you are looking to review your benefits/working practice, it’s always worth asking your current staff what is important to them before you jump in yourself with something that appeals to you.
